Yanmar Power Solutions Receives ClassNK Certification for Hydrogen 4-Stroke Engine

Yanmar Power Solutions, a subsidiary of Japan's Yanmar Holdings, has achieved dual classification certification for its hydrogen-fueled four-stroke high-speed engine designed for domestic coastal vessels. The company received a type approval certificate in October 2025 and a NOx certificate in December 2025 from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), making it the first Japanese engine manufacturer to obtain both certifications for this technology.
The engine, designated as an "Electronically Controlled Gas Only Engine (Hydrogen)," was tested using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a pilot fuel during land-based demonstration trials. The certifications are required for planned demonstration operations scheduled for fall 2026.
Yanmar Power Solutions will install two hydrogen engines on domestic coastal vessels as part of the project scope. The vessel will feature a hybrid electric propulsion system combining hydrogen engine generators with batteries, with a container unit-type hydrogen power generation system mounted on the upper deck.
The development is supported by the Nippon Foundation's Zero Emission Ships Project, which funds hydrogen-powered vessel technology development. Uyeno Transtech, a shipping company under the Uyeno Group, is responsible for the vessel's design and construction.
