Thyssengas Advances 100 km Hydrogen Pipeline Project Connecting Northern Imports to Ruhr Industrial Region

Thyssengas GmbH, a long-distance gas operator acquired by Macquarie Asset Management in 2021, is advancing a hydrogen pipeline project spanning approximately 100 km through Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The pipeline will transport pure gaseous hydrogen at pressures around 80 bar through a DN 1200 steel pipeline (1.2 meters in diameter) from the agricultural region near Emsbüren to the industrial hub of Dorsten.
The project integrates with Germany's national hydrogen strategy, which targets establishing core hydrogen routes by 2030. Thyssengas has mapped over 1,100 km of planned hydrogen corridors, with the Emsbüren-Dorsten line representing one of the first to advance to permitting stages.
The pipeline will connect hydrogen import facilities at Wilhelmshaven and Dutch border entry points to major industrial consumers, including steelmaker thyssenkrupp and chemical facilities. The route forms part of the 9,040 km national core network under the Energy Industry Act.
Technically, the pipeline uses corrosion-resistant steel with potential fiber-reinforced polymer linings to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Compressor stations and sensor networks will monitor continuous flow and safety. Construction involves a 40 m-wide corridor with post-installation land restoration up to 60 cm depth.
Thyssengas is conducting regulatory approval processes, including spatial compatibility review (completed in 2024) and formal land-use planning procedures. Public engagement sessions are scheduled for spring across municipalities along the corridor. Initial operations are targeted for approximately 2030, contingent on sustained policy support and off-taker commitments.
