Sunfire to Establish SOEC Test Facility at BASF Site in Germany

Sunfire will establish a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) test facility at Industriepark Lausitz, located at the BASF site in Schwarzheide, Germany. The facility is scheduled to begin operating by the end of 2026.
The installation aims to validate Sunfire's SOEC technology and generate operational experience applicable to large-scale industrial hydrogen production projects. Sunfire will provide the electrolysis technology, while the industrial park will supply infrastructure, space, and industrial expertise for long-term testing under real industrial conditions.
Jürgen Fuchs, Chairman of BASF InfraService & Solutions Lausitz, stated the facility demonstrates Sunfire's role as a global hydrogen leader and signals the site's innovative strength, strengthening industrial value creation in the Lausitz region.
Christian von Olshausen, CTO of Sunfire, noted that high-temperature electrolysis offers energy-intensive industries significant efficiency advantages for decarbonization. The industrial location enables practical long-term testing at industrial scale with access to robust infrastructure and expertise.
The project is positioned as part of Industriepark Lausitz's continued development and the broader transformation of the Lausitz region.
