Sunfire Launches 50 MW Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer System for Large-Scale Hydrogen Production

Sunfire has introduced a Generation 3 electrolyzer system rated at 50 MW, marking the company's next step in scaling hydrogen production technology. The outdoor, 30 bar(g) pressurized alkaline electrolysis system is modular and preassembled, delivering up to 1,000 kg/h of green hydrogen. Each module integrates 10 of Sunfire's pressurized alkaline Generation 2 stacks.
The system is designed to reduce total plant capital expenditure, accelerate construction and commissioning timelines, and maintain high hydrogen production efficiency with operational flexibility. The integrated stacks are engineered for low degradation and stable long-term performance.
Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag positioned the launch within broader discussions on European energy security and technological sovereignty. He stated that green hydrogen produced in Europe is cost-competitive with imported alternatives in most cases, while European manufacturers offer advantages in standards transparency, execution quality, and reliability. Aldag noted that Sunfire's current 100 MW projects represent repeat orders from existing customers.
Aldag cited Germany's implementation of RED III through the GHG-quota as establishing reliable demand for green hydrogen at meaningful scale. He projected potential demand for up to five gigawatts of electrolyzer capacity over the next five years in Germany alone, which could drive industrial investment and manufacturing growth.
