Suape Port Commits R$15.8 Billion to Green Hydrogen Hub Development in Brazil

The Suape Port in Pernambuco, Brazil, has launched a R$15.8 billion expansion program aimed at establishing the facility as Latin America's primary green hydrogen production and logistics hub by 2030.
The initiative includes installing electrolyzers for green hydrogen production powered by renewable energy, establishing e-methanol and low-carbon fuel plants, and modernizing port infrastructure. APM Terminals is expanding container capacity by 400,000 TEU—representing a 55% increase from current 700,000 TEU capacity—while a fully electric terminal is under construction. An LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) has been operational since 2022.
The port complex spans approximately 40 square kilometers across Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho, currently operating 41 berths along 17 kilometers of quay with dredged channels enabling tide-independent operations year-round. The facility employs approximately 20,000 workers and hosts over 80 companies across 12 industrial parks.
The expansion targets workforce doubling to 40,000 by 2030 and aims to position Suape as a competitive alternative to established European hydrogen hubs. Success depends on securing renewable energy through Brazil's wind and solar auctions, obtaining green hydrogen certification, and establishing long-term offtake agreements. The project faces challenges including permit timelines, environmental considerations, and shipping industry adoption of green fuel infrastructure.
