Solar Foods Partners with BalticSeaH2 to Scale Green Hydrogen-Powered Protein Production

Solar Foods, a Finnish food systems innovator, has announced its participation in BalticSeaH2, a major European Union green hydrogen initiative spanning nine Baltic Sea region countries. The partnership focuses on scaling Solein, a natural single-cell protein product composed of 65-70% protein with additional fats, fiber, and minerals.
Solein is produced through a gas fermentation system powered by green hydrogen and oxygen, combined with carbon dioxide. The company currently operates Factory 01 in Vantaa, capable of producing 160 tons of Solein annually—equivalent to the protein output of a 300-cow dairy farm per day. Factory 02, planned to produce 6,400 tons annually, will be co-developed with strategic partners who will manage hydrogen production, allowing Solar Foods to focus on its core gas fermentation technology.
BalticSeaH2, launched in 2023 as a five-year cross-border hydrogen valley project, aims to establish a 60,000-tonne annual hydrogen production capacity by completion. The consortium includes 40 partners from nine countries and plans to leverage existing gas, electricity, and maritime infrastructure.
Three published investment cases highlight green hydrogen applications: P2X Solutions' 20MW electrolyzer for synthetic methane, Green North Energy's green ammonia and hydrogen plant, and Helen's hydrogen production facility in Helsinki with plans for a 100-200MW expansion.
