Siemens to Supply Romania with 12 Hydrogen-Powered Regional Trains

Siemens Mobility has been awarded a contract by Romania's Railway Reform Authority (ARF) to deliver 12 two-car hydrogen-powered electric multiple units based on the Mireo Plus H platform. The agreement includes full maintenance and repair services for 15 years, with trains entering passenger service in 2029.
The Mireo Plus H features a hydrogen fuel cell-based electric propulsion system combined with battery energy storage. Batteries charge via the fuel cell or regenerative braking, enabling zero local emissions during operation. The trains are configured as articulated two-unit trainsets with a maximum speed of 120 km/h, offering 131 fixed seats plus 5 folding seats per unit.
The vehicles will be equipped with PZB intermittent train control and European Train Control System protection to ensure compliance with European safety standards. A modern Passenger Information System will provide travel information through interior and exterior displays and automated announcements.
Maintenance activities will be performed locally in Romania, including at a dedicated Bucharest depot, using Siemens Mobility personnel supported by Railigent X digital fleet management systems. The hydrogen trains will replace diesel-powered rolling stock, reducing emissions and noise in regional rail transport and supporting Romania's climate objectives.
