Rotterdam The Hague Airport Completes Trial of Hydrogen-Electric Pickup Truck

Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) has concluded a trial of a hydrogen-electric pickup truck developed by Toyota. The week-long evaluation saw the vehicle deployed with Bird Control operations, running from early morning through late evening daily.
The trial represents part of RTM's broader strategy to decarbonize airport ground operations by 2030. While the airport has successfully transitioned much of its lighter vehicle fleet to electric alternatives, it has identified heavier vehicle deployment as a remaining challenge.
RTM regards hydrogen as a "promising solution" for addressing this gap, though the airport notes the technology "still needs to prove itself further in practice." The collaboration with Toyota leverages the airport's operational environment as a testing ground, allowing both organizations to gather practical experience with hydrogen-electric vehicle performance in real-world conditions.
The trial aligns with growing interest in hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty mobility applications in industrial and transportation sectors.
