Protium Acquires Cromarty Hydrogen Project to Advance Highland Green Economy

Protium, a UK-based green hydrogen company, has acquired Storegga's Scottish portfolio, including the Cromarty Hydrogen Project in the Highlands. The acquisition transitions the project from development phase toward implementation under an operator with established hydrogen infrastructure experience.
The 15MW Cromarty facility remains subject to final planning approval, with a committee decision expected next month. Protium operates two existing hydrogen production facilities: Pioneer 1, operational since 2023 with 4,000kg commercial deliveries completed, and Pioneer 2, a 2.5MW facility that recently achieved first gas and is commissioning toward full operations in June 2026. Pioneer 2 is projected to produce one tonne of green hydrogen daily and abate approximately 3,600 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Protium commits to a "Local First" operational model for Cromarty, including approximately 30 permanent high-skilled positions, vocational training partnerships, and local apprenticeships. The company plans water-efficient hydrogen production designed to avoid competition with domestic and agricultural supplies, integrated transport logistics with local hauliers, and grid stability support through demand-side response capability.
The project will utilize high-efficiency technology and operate under strict environmental and safety protocols, with transparent waste management and low-decibel operations. Protium is engaging Highland Council and local Community Councils throughout the planning and development process.
