Pattern Energy Shifts From Wind-Hydrogen to Wind-Only Project in Newfoundland and Labrador

Pattern Energy's wind-hydrogen project at the Port of Argentia in Newfoundland and Labrador has undergone a strategic shift. The company, which had been pursuing a 300-megawatt wind-hydrogen development on Port of Argentia lands, has changed its focus to a wind-only project.
A Contingency Reserve Order was initially established in April 2024 to support the project. The 2,457-hectare reserve, created under the Wind Energy Contingency Land Reserve Order in March 2024, was intended for 18 months through September 28, 2025. In August 2025, the provincial government extended the reserve through March 31, 2026. Pattern Energy has not requested a further extension beyond this date.
Minister of Energy and Mines Lloyd Parrott stated that the government looks forward to working with Pattern Energy on its wind project and remains committed to assessing wind and hydrogen development opportunities in the province on a case-by-case basis.
