Nobian Achieves RFNBO Certification for Green Hydrogen Production at Frankfurt Facility

Nobian announced RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) certification for its Frankfurt production facility in April, marking a significant milestone in the company's green hydrogen expansion across Europe. The facility uses chlor-alkali electrolysis powered by 100% renewable electricity to produce hydrogen as a by-product, with plans to generate up to 6,000 tonnes annually.
The certification meets EU Renewable Energy Directive requirements, which mandate that RFNBO fuels achieve at least 70% lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reductions compared to fossil-based alternatives. Nobian tracks every megawatt-hour of renewable electricity and emission data through the production process, complying with ISCC EU standards for full transparency and traceability.
This certification follows similar approval for Nobian's Rotterdam facility in 2025. The Frankfurt site's strategic location near the Rhine, adjacent chemical parks, and major transportation corridors positions it as a key hydrogen supply point for industrial customers in chemicals, ammonia, methanol, and fuel cell applications seeking certified low-carbon sources.
According to Julien Courtois, Senior Product & Business Development Manager Hydrogen at Nobian, the certification reinforces the company's commitment to delivering traceable green molecules. The facility supports Europe's industrial decarbonization targets, which aim for 42% renewable energy use in industry by 2030.
Nobian, which spun off from Nouryon in 2021, now operates over 20 facilities across Europe and North America with multiple ISCC PLUS certifications.
