Nel ASA Launches Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer Platform with 40-60% Cost Reduction

Nel ASA has commercially launched a next-generation pressurized alkaline electrolyzer platform designed to reduce costs and accelerate renewable hydrogen deployment at scale.
The system follows more than 8 years of development and prototype testing at Nel's Herøya facility in Norway. Based on a 25 MW plant, Nel estimates turnkey costs below $1,450 per kW for hydrogen delivered at 30 bar pressure with 99.99% purity, with additional cost reductions anticipated for larger installations.
The platform features a fully modular, skid-based design with factory-assembled units supplied as standardized products rather than custom builds. Operating in a 15 bar pressurized configuration, it reduces downstream compression requirements and improves overall energy efficiency. The system is optimized for outdoor installation, minimizing civil works and site infrastructure needs.
Nel projects these design features will reduce system CAPEX by 40-60% compared to current market alternatives, while shortening project timelines and lowering execution risk. The technology incorporates proprietary production methods and patent-pending innovations.
Following a final investment decision announced in December 2025, Nel is industrializing the platform at Herøya with planned production capacity of 1 GW annually, scaling to 4 GW annually according to roadmap projections. The EU Innovation Fund is supporting industrialization with a grant of up to €135 million, covering up to 60% of eligible costs.
