Nel ASA Launches Next-Generation Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyser Platform

Nel ASA has announced the commercial launch of its next-generation pressurized alkaline electrolyser system designed to reduce complexity and costs in renewable hydrogen production. The technology platform follows more than eight years of development and successful full-scale prototype testing at Nel's Herøya facility in Norway.
The system addresses significant barriers to hydrogen project deployment, including extensive custom engineering requirements, lengthy execution timelines, and substantial upfront capital investment. Nel estimates the turnkey full-scope cost for its solution at approximately USD 1,450 per kW based on a 25 MW plant installation, with additional cost advantages projected for larger facilities. This represents a substantial reduction compared to current industry standards, where total system costs frequently approach or exceed USD 3,000 per kW.
The electrolyser operates at 30 bar pressure and delivers hydrogen with 99.99% purity. According to Nel, the technology fundamentally restructures the cost economics of industrial-scale green hydrogen production, addressing a key obstacle to large-scale deployment of renewable hydrogen projects.
