MorGen Energy Awarded €422.75M EU Grant for 300MW Danish Green Hydrogen Project

MorGen Energy, a subsidiary of Trafigura, has been awarded conditional EU funding to advance its Njordkraft green hydrogen facility in Esbjerg, Denmark. The €422.75 million grant from the European Hydrogen Bank, financed by the EU Innovation Fund, supports the project's first phase consisting of 300MW of electrolyser capacity, with potential to scale to 1GW.
The project is designed to produce renewable hydrogen meeting EU Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards for European industrial customers in steel, refining, and energy-intensive manufacturing. Located strategically in Esbjerg, Njordkraft will connect to the developing Danish-German hydrogen backbone pipeline linking to Heidenau near Hamburg, enabling distribution across mainland Europe.
Annual production is expected to reach approximately 45,500 tonnes of renewable hydrogen. The facility will leverage competitive renewable power from the Danish grid and benefits from proximity to major industrial demand centers in Germany and Europe.
The award follows a competitive EU-wide auction process under the European Hydrogen Bank. MorGen Energy CEO Werner Lieberherr stated the selection reflects momentum behind Europe's energy market and the project's competitive positioning regarding renewable power access, infrastructure connectivity, and industrial demand proximity.
MorGen Energy has already invested significantly in development activities including land acquisition, permitting, FEED studies, and grid connection preparation. The company now focuses on advancing commercial discussions with industrial partners toward final investment decision and execution.
