Metafuels Receives €1.92 Million Dutch Grant for Rotterdam Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project

Metafuels, a Zurich-based aviation technology company, has received a €1.92 million grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) to support development of its Turbe synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) project in the Port of Rotterdam.
The funding comes through RVO's TSE Industry Studies – Hydrogen & Green Chemistry programme (GroenvermogenNL) and will support critical activities including front-end engineering and design (FEED), permitting, and commercial development activities through final investment decision (FID).
Metafuels' proprietary methanol-to-jet technology, called aerobrew, converts renewable methanol into jet fuel compatible with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. When produced using renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and captured carbon, the company states the fuel can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil kerosene.
The Turbe project is designed as Metafuels' inaugural commercial deployment and aims to begin production from 2030 onwards, aligning with ReFuelEU Aviation e-SAF sub-mandates. The Rotterdam location offers established methanol infrastructure, multimodal logistics, and industrial workforce capabilities.
Metafuels was founded in 2021 and recently completed a €20.7 million funding round led by UVC Partners. The company has also contracted McDermott for FEED services and installed a demonstration plant at Switzerland's Paul Scherrer Institute.
