Mantle8 Raises €31 Million to Advance Natural Hydrogen Exploration in France

Mantle8, a French hydrogen exploration startup based near Grenoble, has completed a €31 million Series A funding round led by Norwegian climate fund Sandwater. The round included backing from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Bpifrance's Ecotechnologies 2 fund, IP Group, Wind Capital, and the Calderion platform. Combined with a €3.4 million seed round from 2024, Mantle8's total funding now reaches approximately €37 million.
The company is developing proprietary technology to locate and extract natural hydrogen—hydrogen created through geological processes such as mineral oxidation and water-rock interactions underground. Mantle8's platform integrates seismic imaging, surface gas analysis, geochemistry, and AI-driven modeling to create probability maps for hydrogen deposits while reducing drilling requirements.
Mantle8 plans to conduct pilot drilling campaigns in France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with 2026 identified as a critical year for transitioning from research to technology scaling. The company targets initial production trials by 2028 and commercial viability around 2030, with a production cost goal of approximately €0.80 per kilogram.
The funding reflects growing industry interest in natural hydrogen as a potentially cost-effective alternative to renewable-powered electrolysis. However, development faces regulatory and environmental considerations, including groundwater protection, induced seismic activity concerns, and long-term reservoir impacts. Success will depend on pilot well performance and regulatory approval for this emerging resource category.
