Jordan Approves $1 Billion Green Ammonia Production Facility

Jordan's Cabinet has approved an agreement with the Jordan Green Ammonia Company for the development of an integrated green ammonia production facility. The project represents the country's entry into the green hydrogen sector with support from international developers and investors.
The facility will operate on a grid-independent model, utilizing solar energy and energy storage systems to produce green hydrogen, which will then be converted to green ammonia. The project's capital cost is estimated at approximately $1 billion, with financial closure anticipated in September 2027.
Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in November 2030. The facility is expected to produce approximately 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually, positioning Jordan to expand its exports of low-carbon products to global markets.
The project's development has been enabled by the Kingdom's new electricity law, which allows renewable energy projects to operate independently from the grid. The facility will be located in Aqaba, leveraging the region's strategic location and existing logistical infrastructure to establish it as a regional hub for green industries and energy.
The project is expected to contribute to the development of green ammonia-based industries, facilitate technology transfer, and support carbon emission reduction efforts.
