Japanese Consortium Establishes Green Hydrogen Corridor with New Zealand

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Obayashi Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), and Chiyoda Corporation announced the establishment of the Japan-New Zealand Hydrogen Corridor on March 5, 2026.
The consortium will conduct feasibility studies beginning this year to develop a hydrogen supply chain originating in New Zealand and enable green hydrogen exports to Japan. Commercial imports and exports are scheduled to commence in the early 2030s.
New Zealand's abundant renewable energy resources, including geothermal and hydropower, provide the foundation for green hydrogen production. The initiative aims to position New Zealand as a leading green hydrogen supply hub for Japan while supporting Japan's decarbonization goals and energy security objectives.
MOL noted that New Zealand's government has prioritized hydrogen industry development through its Hydrogen Action Plan, announced in November 2024, which includes measures to expand the low-emission hydrogen market, reduce regulatory barriers, and improve the investment environment.
The corridor is expected to contribute to establishing New Zealand as a major green hydrogen production and supply hub in the Asia-Pacific region while advancing bilateral economic cooperation through stable international relations.
