ITM Power Partners with Rheinmetall on Giga PtX Synthetic Fuel Production Network

ITM Power and Rheinmetall AG have announced a strategic collaboration focused on the Giga PtX project, which aims to establish a Europe-wide network of decentralized synthetic fuel production facilities for NATO armed forces.
The initiative seeks to strengthen defence energy resilience, sovereign fuel capability, and operational readiness. The project envisions deployment of several hundred production plants across Europe, each with electrolysis capacity up to 50 MW and capable of producing approximately 5,000 to 7,000 tonnes of e-fuel annually per facility.
The partnership combines Rheinmetall's Power-to-X expertise and system integration capabilities with ITM Power's electrolyser technology. Initial collaboration efforts will focus on the UK market.
According to the companies, synthetic fuels are critical for defence and mission-critical sectors where electrification is not feasible and secure, reliable fuel supply is essential. The decentralized production approach is positioned as structurally more resilient than traditional supply chains.
Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, stated the collaboration aligns energy transition with national security priorities, while Shena Britzen, Head of Hydrogen Program at Rheinmetall, described e-fuels as "a strategic necessity" for European defence force energy autonomy.
