ITM Power and Rheinmetall Partner on Giga PtX Defense Fuel Network

ITM Power and Rheinmetall have announced a collaboration to establish the Giga PtX project, a Europe-wide network of decentralized synthetic fuel production facilities intended for NATO armed forces.
The initiative envisions several hundred plants across Europe, each with electrolysis capacity up to 50 MW and annual e-fuel output of approximately 5,000–7,000 tonnes. The project aims to enhance defense energy resilience, sovereign fuel capability, and operational readiness.
Under the partnership, Rheinmetall will contribute its Power-to-X system integration expertise and defense sector experience, while ITM Power will provide electrolyser systems and technology. Initial deployment focus is on the UK market.
Both companies identified synthetic fuels as critical for defense and mission-critical sectors where full electrification is not feasible. They characterized Giga PtX as a growth opportunity for large-scale hydrogen production technologies, particularly as defense sectors prioritize resilient and independent energy supply.
Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, emphasized that decentralized production offers greater structural resilience compared to traditional supply chains. Shena Britzen, Head of Hydrogen Program at Rheinmetall AG, described e-fuels as a strategic necessity for European defense force energy autonomy.
