Hynamics to Supply Green Hydrogen to Ottmarsheim Ammonia Plant

Hynamics, the hydrogen arm of EDF Group, has announced an agreement to supply low-carbon hydrogen to the Ottmarsheim fertilizer plant operated by LAT Nitrogen in France's Grand Est region. The project, approved under the EU's Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) framework, will replace conventional natural gas used in ammonia synthesis with hydrogen produced via electrolysis.
The facility will utilize water-splitting electrolysis—either alkaline or PEM systems—powered by renewable electricity to produce hydrogen without carbon emissions, in contrast to the conventional steam methane reforming process. This transformation addresses a significant environmental concern: ammonia production via the Haber-Bosch process accounts for approximately 2% of global energy consumption and generates roughly one tonne of CO₂ for every tonne of hydrogen produced conventionally.
Hynamics, established in 2019 under EDF's Hydrogen Plan, currently operates 3 MW of electrolyser capacity in France with plans to scale to 60 GW across Europe. The hydrogen will carry quality certifications under European standards. While specific delivery volumes and dates remain undisclosed, the project represents a significant step in industrial decarbonization and aligns with the EU Hydrogen Strategy's goal of 10 million tonnes of domestic low-carbon hydrogen by 2030.
The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities in construction, maintenance, and logistics, while reducing ammonia's carbon footprint and potentially unlocking sustainability-linked financing for the facility.
