HVR Energy Secures €20.35 Million for 30 Green Hydrogen Refueling Stations in Spain

HVR Energy is expanding hydrogen refueling infrastructure in Spain through the ACTIVA project, which has locked in €20.35 million in combined funding. The Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO) committed €12.75 million, while the EU's Connecting Europe Facility under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) provided €7.6 million. This funding follows an earlier €7 million ICO investment that enabled 20 stations to launch.
The deployment targets 30 refueling stations nationwide, supporting Spain's 2030 objective of establishing 150 operational hydrogen refueling stations. The first station opened in Coslada, located in Madrid's Corredor del Henares logistics hub, using renewable-powered electrolysis to produce green hydrogen for municipal buses and fuel cell vehicles.
The Coslada station features a modular design that integrates water electrolysis, on-site hydrogen compression, and storage with fuel dispensing capabilities. The modular approach enables rapid deployment and simplified maintenance, making the design adaptable for urban centers and highway corridors.
The funding structure combines national and EU support to reduce barriers for logistics operators and municipalities adopting green hydrogen solutions. The project aligns with Spain's 2020 Hydrogen Roadmap and the PERTE scheme, which directs public and private resources toward decarbonization and industrial scale-up through the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) framework.
