Gasunie Commissions 32-km Hydrogen Pipeline in Rotterdam Port

Gasunie has commissioned a 32-km hydrogen pipeline within the Port of Rotterdam, establishing the first major operational section of the Dutch hydrogen backbone. The pipeline connects Maasvlakte, where large-scale green hydrogen production projects powered by offshore wind are developing, with Pernis, a key petrochemical and refining hub along the Nieuwe Maas river.
The infrastructure enables transport of low-carbon hydrogen from future production sites at Maasvlakte to existing industrial users at Pernis and the surrounding Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, supporting replacement of conventional fossil-based hydrogen in refining and chemical processes.
Construction of the national hydrogen network began in October 2023. Gasunie plans to expand the network over coming years to connect major industrial regions across the Netherlands and link to storage facilities and networks in Germany and Belgium.
Gasunie has also signed an agreement with German transmission system operators Open Grid Europe and Thyssengas to develop a cross-border hydrogen connection between the Netherlands and Germany, targeting completion around 2031.
