Gasunie and Fluxys Sign Agreement for Dutch-Belgian Cross-Border Hydrogen Pipeline

Hynetwork, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Gasunie, and Belgian transmission operator Fluxys have signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to establish cross-border hydrogen connections between the two countries.
The project aims to interconnect Dutch and Belgian hydrogen infrastructure by approximately 2030, leveraging existing natural gas pipelines repurposed for hydrogen transmission where possible. The companies identified the border point near Zandvliet, between Zeeland in the Netherlands and Antwerp in Belgium, as the first strategic bidirectional node. This location will connect key import and production sites to industrial clusters including the North Sea Port, Port of Rotterdam, and the ports of Antwerp and Ghent.
The agreement establishes shared technical and organizational specifications covering planning, location, capacity, and other infrastructure details. The JDA also allows for development of additional border connection points.
Helmie Botter, Gasunie's Hydrogen Transport Director, stated the infrastructure is "crucial for a properly functioning hydrogen market in north-western Europe," while Ben de Waele, Director of Fluxys hydrogen, noted the companies are "joining forces to develop bidirectional hydrogen transport infrastructure" and working to expand connections to neighboring countries.
The initiative is intended to support creation of an integrated, open, and accessible hydrogen transmission network across north-western Europe to enhance energy independence and accelerate industrial decarbonization.
