Four Energy Companies Bid to Develop UK's First Regional Hydrogen Network in the Humber

National Gas, Centrica, Equinor, and SSE Thermal have launched a coordinated bid through Humber Hydrogen to develop Great Britain's first regional hydrogen transport and storage network in the Humber region.
The proposed network would connect hydrogen production projects across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including locations at Aldbrough, Easington, Saltend, Immingham, and Keadby. The infrastructure comprises the Humber Hydrogen Pipeline and Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage, with proposals to be submitted under the UK Government's Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model processes.
The funding decision, expected to be valued around £500 million (€585 million), would establish the foundational infrastructure for large-scale hydrogen deployment in the UK. According to the partners, the network would support industrial decarbonization in the Humber by enabling fuel switching in hard-to-electrify sectors including heavy manufacturing, chemicals, steel, and power generation. The infrastructure would also support production of ammonia and sustainable aviation fuel.
Several large-scale hydrogen projects are already proposed in the region, including H2H Easington and H2H Saltend hydrogen production plants, plus Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage. The Humber Energy Board chair stated that backing these plans in 2026 would support regional economic transformation and energy security for the UK.
