Fortum Opens Kalla Hydrogen Test Center in Finland with Stargate Alkaline Electrolyzer

Fortum has officially inaugurated the Kalla Test Center in Loviisa, Finland, a pilot-scale facility designed to validate hydrogen technologies under real operating conditions. The site features Stargate Hydrogen's 1 MW alkaline electrolyzer alongside a second electrolyzer system, making it one of the first Nordic locations to test multiple electrolyzer technologies simultaneously.
The €20 million project began site preparation in autumn 2024, with construction commencing in summer 2025. Initial hydrogen production occurred during commissioning in December 2025, with full operational status expected by summer 2026. The facility is designed to support approximately 2 MW of hydrogen production capacity.
The Kalla Test Center will serve multiple purposes: operational learning, technology validation, and future project development through 2028. For Fortum, the facility represents a foundational step in building practical experience with hydrogen production and industrial decarbonization. For Stargate Hydrogen, the deployment demonstrates the maturity of its alkaline electrolyzer technology at scale with a major industrial partner.
Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, stated the project proves the company has achieved the maturity level required by large industries. Satu Sipola, Vice President of P2X & Project Execution at Fortum, emphasized the step-by-step approach as essential for ensuring technical readiness and commercial viability.
