EWE Awards Bilfinger Contract for 320 MW Emden Hydrogen Plant

EWE has awarded Bilfinger a major contract for steelwork, piping, and component assembly at its 320 MW hydrogen production plant in Emden, Germany. The facility is part of the IPCEI project 'Clean Hydrogen Coastline' and is expected to be among Europe's largest hydrogen production facilities, with operations commencing in late 2027.
Bilfinger's scope includes detailed engineering, delivery, installation, and commissioning of balance-of-plant components, including several kilometers of piping systems, steel construction work, and integration of auxiliary technical facilities.
With the final major contract package now awarded, EWE has defined critical cost and planning parameters, enabling concrete negotiations on long-term green hydrogen supply agreements with industrial customers. The plant is positioned as part of EWE's integrated hydrogen value chain approach across production, storage, transport, and delivery in Lower Saxony.
Tobias Moldenhauer, Managing Director of EWE HYDROGEN, stated that completing major construction contracts provides "a solid foundation" for offering competitive long-term supply agreements. Thomas Schulz, Group CEO of Bilfinger, noted the company's experience across the entire hydrogen value chain supports advancing Germany's hydrogen economy development.
EWE indicated that sustained project investment depends on stable market mechanisms, regulatory certainty, and pragmatic guidelines at the European level.
