Enagás Launches Market Consultation for Spanish Hydrogen Backbone and CO₂ Logistics Network

Enagás, Spain's independent gas transmission operator, has launched a two-part initiative to develop hydrogen and carbon capture infrastructure. The first call invites hydrogen producers, consumers, and marketers to register their projected needs for a proposed backbone spanning approximately 2,750 kilometers using repurposed natural gas pipelines. The second targets CO₂ emitters and potential users interested in CO₂ logistics services connected to Enagás's regasification terminals.
The hydrogen backbone will connect key industrial areas and renewable energy sources, supporting Spain's goal of achieving 11 GW of green hydrogen electrolysis capacity by 2030. By repurposing existing pipelines and underground storage caverns, Enagás estimates cost savings compared to new construction while enabling the transport of hydrogen and captured CO₂ to industrial and power generation facilities.
Enagás is concurrently developing CO₂ capture projects, including the CO₂necta initiative targeting over 500,000 tonnes annually and a Calcinor partnership aiming for nearly one million tonnes yearly. Four LNG regasification terminals in Huelva, Barcelona, Cartagena, and Gijón will handle liquefaction and distribution of captured CO₂.
Stakeholders can submit their information through digital platforms and webinars held this month. Hydrogen participants have until mid-June to express interests, while CO₂ emitters and users have until early July. The initiative aligns with Spain's 2020 Hydrogen Roadmap and EU net-zero targets, positioning Enagás to stabilize revenues amid declining natural gas demand.
