Eclipse Energy and Wood Partner to Commercialize Subsurface Hydrogen Production from Retired Oil Fields

Eclipse Energy and Wood announced a partnership to advance the commercialization and global deployment of subsurface hydrogen production technology. The collaboration combines Wood's engineering, consulting, and decarbonization expertise with Eclipse's subsurface hydrogen technology, which converts retired oil reservoirs into hydrogen-producing assets.
Eclipse's approach repurposes existing oilfield infrastructure to produce hydrogen at lower capital costs compared to greenfield hydrogen developments. The model aims to extend the life of mature assets while delivering scalable, lower-carbon hydrogen production.
Under the partnership, Eclipse will lead technology development and commercial project origination, working alongside Weatherford for oilfield services execution. Wood will provide engineering design, downstream expertise, and advisory support including decarbonization strategy, lifecycle assessment, and levelized cost of hydrogen analysis.
The companies have multiple projects progressing in 2026 and plan to publish levelized cost of hydrogen and carbon intensity results within the first half of the year. Eclipse CEO Prabhdeep Singh Sekhon stated the partnership strengthens the company's ability to deploy projects at the scale required in the global market. Dan Carter, President of Consulting at Wood, noted the technology's potential to extend the productive life of mature oil fields while delivering scalable hydrogen.
