Defense Supplier Rheinmetall Proposes Europe-Wide Green Hydrogen Network for Military Fuels

Rheinmetall, a leading global defense supplier, has announced the "Giga PtX" project to establish a Europe-wide network of modular synthetic fuel production plants for NATO military operations. The initiative seeks to enhance defense energy resilience and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Under the collaboration announced on April 17, electrolyzer producer ITM Power will support the deployment of several hundred facilities, each equipped with electrolysis systems of up to 50 megawatts. These plants are designed to produce 5,000–7,000 tonnes of liquid synthetic fuel annually from green hydrogen—hydrogen produced by splitting water using renewable electricity.
Rheinmetall's proposal addresses military fuel logistics challenges. The company states that military operations can consume 20 to 60 liters of fuel per soldier daily, and synthetic e-fuels offer the energy density, storability, and versatility needed to match conventional fossil fuels while utilizing renewable energy and captured carbon.
The partnership builds on Rheinmetall's 2024 collaboration with German Power-to-Liquid firm INERATEC to construct a pilot e-fuels plant. ITM Power emphasized that synthetic fuels are essential for defense and mission-critical sectors where electrification is not viable.
The project reflects broader European efforts to strengthen energy independence amid global fuel market volatility and supply chain concerns.
