Bologna Launches Hydrogen Bus Operations with 127-Unit Fleet Deployment

Hydrogen fuel cell buses have entered operation in Bologna as public transport operator Tper deployed the first Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen vehicles on the city network. The deployment follows completion of the authorisation process for the hydrogen refuelling facility located at the Via Battindarno depot.
The initiative represents the initial phase of a broader fleet expansion, with 127 hydrogen fuel cell buses planned for progressive introduction into service. These vehicles will operate primarily on urban routes requiring 12-metre buses, as well as suburban connections across the Bologna metropolitan area.
The hydrogen bus deployment forms part of Tper's zero-emission mobility strategy, which also encompasses expansion of battery-electric buses, trolleybuses, and development of a future tram network. The company is diversifying its approach to reducing emissions across multiple transit technologies rather than relying on a single zero-emission solution.
