Bavaria Commits Support for Onyx Power's Hydrogen-Ready Gas Turbine Plant

On May 7, 2026, Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Hubert Aiwanger visited the Zolling site to sign a joint Letter of Intent between the Bavarian Ministry and Onyx Power for construction of a modern hydrogen-ready gas turbine power plant.
The planned facility will be built under the Electricity Supply Security and Capacity Act and is intended to provide grid stability in Bavaria, particularly during periods of low renewable energy generation. The plant will help cover peak loads and support electricity supply in southern Bavaria.
Minister Aiwanger stated that gas-fired power plants are increasingly important for energy security in southern Germany, especially following nuclear phase-out and coal reduction. The Zolling site, an established energy hub, is expected to strengthen its relevance beyond 2031 through this project.
Roman Ritter, Power Plant Manager at Zolling, emphasized that the project is critical for the site, region, and Germany's energy security. He noted that modern, flexible power plants are essential to the energy transition's success and called for reliable legal frameworks and functioning tender mechanisms to realize the project.
Onyx Power will continue advancing plans for the hydrogen-capable combined cycle power plant while maintaining dialogue with policymakers to support secure energy supply and Bavaria's energy transition goals.
