Battolyser Systems and VDL Hydrogen Systems Merge to Form Alquion

The merger of VDL Hydrogen Systems and Battolyser Systems, announced in July 2025, is now finalized. Both companies are operating under the new name Alquion, with over 50 employees focused on marketing and developing the Flexolyser electrolyser.
The Flexolyser is a fully flexible, high-capacity alkaline electrolyser designed to integrate large-scale renewable energy sources into the energy system. Unlike existing industrial electrolysers that require minimum production levels of 20-40% and are difficult to start and shut down, the Flexolyser can be started and stopped without performance loss. This capability allows it to convert surplus renewable electricity into hydrogen during high wind conditions and shut down when wind is low, drawing on stored or imported hydrogen instead.
According to Alquion, this flexibility could reduce green hydrogen production costs in the Netherlands by up to 25% without increasing network congestion, potentially enabling locally-produced hydrogen to compete with imported hydrogen prices.
Alquion will partner with VDL Groep for industrial assembly of the electrolyser stack—the core component where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. An investment decision for a 0.5-MW demonstration system is scheduled for May 2025, with preparations underway for 5-10 MW production systems. The companies are part of HyValueChain, a consortium developing an electrolyser supply chain in the Netherlands.
Alquion CEO Mattijs Slee stated that innovation and scale-up are necessary to accelerate the hydrogen economy, with the Flexolyser serving industries including chemical, e-fuels, steel, and network applications.
