Barrow Green Hydrogen Project Reaches Final Investment Decision with Plug Power

The 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, has reached final investment decision (FID), marking the transition into the execution phase. The project is being delivered by Green Hydrogen Energy Company (GHECO), a joint venture established in 2023 by Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power.
Plug Power will supply six 5 MW GenEco Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers for the facility. The project is designed to produce approximately 100 GWh of green hydrogen annually for supply to Kimberly-Clark's manufacturing plant in Barrow-in-Furness.
The implementation is expected to reduce natural gas consumption at Kimberly-Clark's site by up to 50%, resulting in CO₂ emissions reductions of 18,300 tonnes annually. A long-term power purchase agreement with SEFE has been finalized for renewable electricity supply.
Barrow represents the first of GHECO's three planned UK projects to reach FID. Plug Power's overall UK award includes a combined 55 MW of GenEco electrolyzers across Barrow, Trafford, and Langage, with the latter two projects continuing to progress toward their respective final investment decisions.
