Ballard Power Systems Appoints Ralph Robinett as COO to Scale Manufacturing Operations

Ballard Power Systems, a Canadian PEM fuel cell developer founded in 1979, appointed Ralph Robinett as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer earlier this month. Robinett will oversee production operations across Ballard's facilities in Canada, Denmark, and the United States, reporting to CEO Randy MacEwen.
Robinett brings over 25 years of global operations and supply chain experience from leadership roles at Amazon, Flex, and Jabil. At Amazon, he optimized supplier networks and implemented data-driven forecasting to reduce lead times. At Flex, he diversified component sourcing to mitigate geopolitical risks.
At Ballard, Robinett will focus on streamlining fuel cell stack and module assembly, optimizing material sourcing, improving delivery logistics, and reinforcing quality systems. He plans to implement lean manufacturing techniques including Kanban inventory control, Six Sigma quality processes, and takt time management to reduce costs and increase production throughput.
Ballard specializes in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells for heavy-duty applications including buses, trucks, rail, and marine vessels, along with stationary power generation. The company operates strategic partnerships with Weichai Power, Siemens, and European bus manufacturers.
Market analysts responded positively to the leadership appointment, citing potential for improved supply chain resilience, though noting that platinum catalyst costs and rare earth material availability remain industry concerns.
