Atome Reaches Final Investment Decision on $665M Green Hydrogen Fertilizer Plant in Paraguay

Atome PLC has achieved Final Investment Decision (FID) on a green hydrogen-based fertilizer production facility in Villeta, Paraguay. The company describes the 260,000 tonne-per-year low-carbon fertilizer plant as the first industrial-scale facility of its kind globally to reach FID.
The $665 million project is funded through $420 million in debt financing from international development finance institutions and $245 million in equity investment. Equity backers include Hy24 (through its Clean Hydrogen Infrastructure Fund), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), KfW DEG, the Danish Government Development Fund, and Sudameris, Paraguay's second-largest financial institution.
Construction is expected to begin following FID, with full production projected to commence by or before October 2029. The project does not rely on UK government grants or aid.
In related developments, Nel Hydrogen received a $7 million purchase order for PEM electrolyzer equipment from Douglas County Public Utility District in Washington state, and researchers published a techno-economic analysis of solar-powered green hydrogen production at Italian coastal ports, finding levelized costs ranging from €5/kg to €8/kg depending on configuration.
