ARENA Announces Shortlisted Projects for Australia's $1 Billion Hydrogen Headstart Program Round 2

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced shortlisted projects for Round 2 of the Hydrogen Headstart Program, a significant development for Australia's renewable hydrogen sector. The selected projects represent some of the country's most advanced large-scale renewable hydrogen proposals, spanning multiple states with applications in ammonia production and alternative fuels.
The Australian Government has allocated $1 billion in funding for the program through the 2026 Federal Budget. ARENA will now invite shortlisted applicants to submit full applications, which will undergo rigorous assessment and detailed due diligence. Only projects meeting the program's high merit threshold will be considered for funding support.
ARIENA CEO Darren Miller highlighted that the engagement level demonstrates industry commitment to developing Australia's renewable hydrogen sector. The agency notes that renewable hydrogen offers significant economic and decarbonisation opportunities, with potential applications in low-emission aviation and shipping fuels, as well as fertiliser production inputs.
Shortlisted applicants include the Murchison Hydrogen Renewables Project Trust, developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Full applications are due by early September 2026, with final recommendations to be made to the Minister for Climate Change and Energy.
ARIENA has committed over $1.2 billion to two Round 1 projects and distributed more than $396 million to 68 renewable hydrogen projects since 2017 through other funding programs.
