African Development Bank Opens $20 Million Green Hydrogen Programme for African Projects

The African Development Bank's Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has opened applications for its Green Hydrogen Programme (GH), targeting private sector entities developing green hydrogen and derivatives projects across Africa.
The programme, initially capitalised with funding from the German government and approved at the end of 2025, will distribute up to $20 million in pre-investment financing among three to five top-ranked projects selected through the competitive call for proposals, subject to due diligence.
Financing will be provided primarily through reimbursable grants for advisory services, supporting projects toward Final Investment Decision and financial close stages. Eligible activities include feasibility studies, engineering design preparation for procurement and construction, and transaction advisory services.
Dr Daniel Schroth, Director of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Department at AfDB, stated that green hydrogen represents an opportunity for Africa to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries while building new value chains and contributing to socio-economic development. The programme is designed to help emerging green hydrogen projects transition from development to bankability.
The application window opens on 10 April 2026 at 09:30 GMT. Proposals must be submitted via sefaafrica.org by 11 May 2026 at 17:00 Abidjan time. Full eligibility criteria and application materials are available on the SEFA website.
